Research Programs
The Gynecologic Disease Program (GDP) is a collaborative research program that includes Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC), the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, the Windber Research Institute, and Georgetown University Medical Center, and is supported by the Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancment of Military Medicine.
The individual researchers comprising the membership of the GDP have world renowned areas of expertise. For example:
- Investigators at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute have expertise in the analysis of blood samples for proteins that may potentially enable us to detect cancer in its earliest stages of growth.
- Researchers at Georgetown University and the Lombardi Cancer Center have recognized experience in the development of animal models for research; innovative radiological imaging and interventional treatment of tumors; and development of gene therapies that utilize innovative robotic delivery systems.
- The Windber Research Institute is a state-of-the-art biomedical research facility capable of high through-put protein analysis of gynecologic tumors. Combined with the genetic data that the Walter Reed program will continue to generate, the collective information from this program will facilitate the future development of chemopreventive agents and therapeutics. Given the academic caliber and scientific expertise of the membership, this group is uniquely positioned to develop a center of excellence for treatment and research in this field.
The Gynecologic Cancer Center for Racial Disparities (GCC) was initiated in 2004 to research and identify the reasons behind poor outcomes in minority patients with gynecologic cancer. Program staff hope to improve overall patient care by creating tailored education, screening, prevention and treatment programs. This project is a collaboration among the Ohio State University Cancer and WRAMC.
